Former Indian hockey goalkeeper Manuel Frederick passed away at the age of 78. He was a member of the Indian team that won the Bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Frederick made history as the first person from Kerala to win an Olympic medal. His goalkeeping skills were marked by dedication and humility.

"Manuel Frederick was one of India's finest goalkeepers -- a true guardian of the post whose contributions during a glorious period of Indian hockey will always be remembered. His achievements paved the way for many who dreamt of representing India at the highest level. On behalf of Hockey India, I extend my deepest condolences to his family. Indian hockey has lost a great son, but his legacy will forever live on," said Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey.

"It is an extremely sad day for the hockey fraternity. Manuel Frederick's dedication, especially as a pioneer from Kerala, inspired countless youngsters from non-traditional hockey regions to believe in their dreams. His discipline, commitment, and service to the nation will always be honoured. We stand with his family in this moment of grief," said Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh.

Frederick was born in Burnassery, Kannur, in 1947. He began his sports career in the Army's school team in Bengaluru.

His club career included playing for ASC and HAL in Karnataka, Services, Uttar Pradesh, and Mohun Bagan club.

Frederick joined the Indian national team in 1971 and played for seven years. He participated in two Hockey World Cups - Netherlands 1973, where India secured Silver, and Argentina 1978.

He earned the nickname 'Tiger' for his fearless goalkeeping style. He was particularly known for his expertise in defending penalty strokes.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports honored Frederick with the Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2019.
