Death By Lightning is nearly here, with an all-star cast bringing the unbelievable true story to life.

Set in the late 19th Century, Death By Lightning follows two timelines, the first of which is James Garfield (played by Michael Shannon), the man who accidentally became President of the United States.

The second timeline is of Garfield's greatest admirer as well as his killer Charles Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen) as he struggles to find his way in the world.

Death By Lightning's creator Mike Makowsky has described the real-life story as both "wild and tragic" so the four-part limited series isn't one to miss.

Here's a breakdown of who stars in Death By Lightning ahead of the Netflix drama's release this week.

Portraying America's assassinated 20th President James Garfield is actor Michael Shannon who made his film debut in the 1993 romcom Groundhog Day with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.

He is also recognised from his work in 99 Homes, The Shape of Water, Revolutionary Road and The Flash.

Actor Matthew Macfadyen is no stranger when it comes to award-winning shows as he portrayed Tom Wambsgans for all four seasons of the iconic HBO drama Succession.

Before this, Macfadyen, who is behind Garfield's assassin Charles, was famed for playing Mr Darcy opposite Keira Knightley in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

James Garfield's wife and America's First Lady during this period Crete Garfield is played by actress Betty Gilpin.

She is renowned for playing Debbie "Liberty Belle" Eagan in Netflix's GLOW, Lina Parish in Three Women and Dr Carrie Roman in Nurse Jackie.

Actor and comedian Nick Offerman is best associated with Ron Swanson in the iconic NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation.

More recently, Offerman has been in The Last of Us, Devs, Pam and Tommy, The Umbrella Academy and Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning.

He takes on the role of Chester Arthur in Death By Lightning, Garfield's Vice President and successor following his assassination.

Prominent Republican Senator Roscoe Conkling is played by Boardwalk Empire star Shea Whigham who was behind Elias "Eli" Thompson for all five seasons.

He can also be recognised for his parts in the first series of True Detective, Fargo, Silver Linings Playbook, Joker and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Republican politician and friend of Garfield's John Sherman is portrayed by actor Alistair Petrie.

Netflix fans will remember him as Michael Groff in the hit comedy-drama Sex Education.

Some of his other memorable parts have been in Magpie, Funny Women, Andor and The Night Manager as Sandy Langbourne.

Actor Bradley Whitford starred as White House deputy chief of staff Josh Lyman in the award-winning series The West Wing.

Fans may also recognise him from The Handmaid's Tale, Get Out, Perfect Harmony and The Diplomat.

Whitford is behind James Blaine, Garfield's Secretary of State in Death By Lightning.
